Cuba Fire Rescue Recognizes Department Pioneers

Cuba Fire Rescue is the responsive and quality organization it is today because of the dedication and selflessness demonstrated by the department’s pioneering volunteer members over the past several decades.

In the following series of posts, we will be highlighting the service and accomplishments of our longstanding community members to begin with Mr. Mickey Herrera. Please join us in honoring Mr. Herrera and the other Cuba Fire Rescue Pioneers who we will be recognizing over the course. These members set an example for the rest of us and encourage the next generation of community servants.

U.S. 550 Bridge Rehabilitation Begins in Cuba

PROJECT OVERVIEW

This $2 million project, which begins on Monday, Jan. 11, 2021 and is expected to last through spring 2021, will rehabilitate an existing bridge and slightly more than one-third mile of U.S. 550 over Rito Leche in Cuba, New Mexico from south of Trujillo Street to just south of Sandoval Blvd. The bridge is old and is in need of replacement for better safety.

TRAFFIC IMPACTS – PHASE 1

The project will be built in four (4) phases with some sub-phases. El Terrero Construction, LLC is the contractor. The first phase, which is expected to last for about one month, will allow the contractor to re-build the eastern half of the bridge, including new sidewalk, curb ramps and bridge railing and tying in the new bridge to existing pavement.

During this phase the following traffic impacts will be in place:

• The inside lane of southbound U.S. 550 will be closed with one lane of traffic in the inside lane.

• The outside lane of northbound U.S. 550 will be closed with one lane of traffic in the inside lane, which will shift across the median into the southbound lane.

• Traffic will be detoured as shown on the map.

• Pedestrians will also be detoured.

Regular work hours will be 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, although the contractor may work longer hours or on weekends as needed. All construction is weather permitting and is subject to change without notice.

About COVID-19 Vaccine Distribution

The New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) is in the process of developing a website for registration for the COVID-19 vaccine. Once built, all New Mexico residents will be able to login and register to receive a vaccination. It will be the responsibility of NMDOH to determine the order of vaccine distribution to the general public, based on a number of determining factors, such as whether or not the individual is in a High-Risk category.

Once completed and launched, the website will gather information supplied by the individual requesting a vaccine, and then will notify them of their status and when they will be able to receive the vaccine at a later date.

NMDOH will be the point of contact for all vaccination information and will notify Sandoval County’s public health officials as soon as they know when shipments of the vaccine will be made available for the community. At that point, Sandoval County will begin advertising Vaccination Points of Distribution via news media outlets, social media, and county and partner websites or newsletters. It is anticipated that the earliest the County might receive vaccines for the general public is mid-March or April.

Please feel free to call Department of Health hotline 855-600-3453 if you have questions or need more information.  Call 911 if you need medical help.

Fire Ban Rescinded 28 JULY 2020

Effective Tuesday, July 28, 2020, the Burn Ban announced April 15, 2020, is hereby rescinded. Cuba Fire Rescue has lifted open fire restrictions on all municipal lands. Controlled brush burning must still be approved by the department, and rubbish and other waste products are never allowed to be burned.

Increased precipitation from the monsoon season is beginning to quell the fire danger enough that we feel it is safe to lift fire restrictions put in place on April 15th, 2020.

Cuba Fire Rescue will continue to monitor conditions along with partnering agencies and could re-implement restrictions should the fire danger worsen.

Village of Cuba Enforces State Face Mask Requirement

Cuba Fire Rescue fully supports New Mexico Governor Lujan Grisham’s executive orders mandating the wearing of face masks in public to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 during the declared public health state of emergency. The Village of Cuba has instructed all civic personnel to abide by the order. A $100 fine may be issued for non-compliance. A copy of the full Directive can be read using the link below.

The New Mexico Department of Health’s June 30, 2020 Public Health Emergency Order (“June 30 PHEO”) requires all individuals to wear a mask or cloth face covering in public settings except when eating, drinking, or exercising, or unless a healthcare provider instructs otherwise.

In accordance with Section 12-10-10, all state and local law enforcement agencies which enforce the mask/face covering requirement of the June 30 PHEO are directed to enforce the requirement under following enforcement criteria:

  • A citation should only be issued to a person who is intentionally disregarding face covering requirements. This includes individuals who know that their refusal to wear a mask/face covering violates the law and have purposefully chosen not to comply, it does not include individuals who are inadvertently out of compliance with requirements.
  • Law enforcement should enforce mask/face covering requirements in outdoor public areas, including but not limited to public parks, streets, sidewalks, lines for entry, exit or service, and recreation areas, only when a distance of at least six feet cannot be maintained from any non-household members.
  • Law enforcement should also respond to any reports of an individual who is refusing to wear a face covering inside of a building that is open to the public, including any business.
  • Law enforcement should enforce the requirement in healthcare settings, including but not limited to, a hospital, pharmacy, medical clinic, laboratory, physician’s or dentist’s office, veterinary clinic, or blood bank.
  • Law enforcement should also ensure that the requirement is being following by individuals in line waiting for or riding on public transportation or paratransit, or while riding in a taxi, private car service, ride-sharing vehicle, or other for-hire vehicle.

In a July 3 letter from New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas to the Governor, Balderas “agrees that the orders have the full force of law and are enforceable by state and local law enforcement.” Read the full text of the Attorney General’s letter using the link below.
